Eary Pilot cap

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Here's my little Mardie wearing a cap I designed and crocheted for him in about an hour from LB Kool Wool. I used one ball, it took the whole ball. It's like a pilot cap with ears!

Here's my best attempt at a pattern for this. I had a request so I decided to write it down.
I didn't make a gage swatch but this is crocheted fairly firmly.
Ears
Using LB Kool Wool and a K hook ch 18, in starting in 2nd ch from hook
*1sc, 1hdc, 1 dc, 2tc, skip 3 sc on foundation chain and join*, sc 5 into foundation chain, ch 6 to
form 2nd ear, in 2nd ch from hook repeat from * to *.
do not turn, continue around foundation chain and sc on back side of loops. Do not join with sl st.
In front of hat sc, hdc 14, inc by 2hdc in next stitch, hdc 14 and inc. mark inc at each end and
continue around making one inc at each "corner" of the hat. 1.5" down from the foundation chain at the back of the hat dc row instead of hdc, continue to inc at corners
and hdc around the front . Continue until hat measures 5.25" at the front. End at front of hat before inc to start chin strap. Do not break yarn.
chin strap
chain to 8" join in 6th chain from hook and sc across chain, join to
hat at inc stitch, inc and continue across back of hat. inc. and sl st into hat front.
Finishing
Add a small button here and voila, a little hat!

Finished hat measures 4.25" from outside of ear edges across the top
and 9" across the bottom when folded flat. finished strap is 7.25"
long.
